WHY MERGER OF PRP-CONGRESS IS WRONG
Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) was founded by Telugu Superstar Chiranjeevi in Andhra Pradesh 2008. It promised to become a great party for the Telugu people. Chiranjeevi being an superstar for the past decades attracts immense mass following in Andhra Pradesh.
In 1984, NTR, superstar of that time launched a party called Telugu Desam and had won the state Elections, and became Chief Minister. People expected something similar this time. But, unfortunately, this didn’t happen. During 2009 Assembly Elections, PRP won only 18 seats out of 294 MLA’s in AP. This was surely a debacle for such promising party.
But it had emerged as a very important party in AP because, it got nearly 18 seats, and stood 3rd in tally of MLA’s after Congress and TDP. Such a party can become chief ally of any leading party. Since , Congress won by clear majority, it didn’t need PRP.
Later on, in Feb 2011, Chiranjeevi announced that his party will be merged with Congress party. This means his 17 MLA’s (1 went to YSR Congress) will be given to Congress. This has brought great anger from many of his supporters. There are many reasons to be angry.
Firstly, all those who voted for PRP voted only for Chiranjeevi, and his mouth-watering promises. They believed PRP could bring relief to AP and bring good Change for the state. They believed, Chiranjeevi would work very hard, and achieve great goals, as he showed in his movies. People believed PRP to be a better alternative to Congress & TDP. Alas, it was a never happening dream.
Secondly, the think-tank of Chiranjeevi. He has found out that Congress is in power at the Central level, as well as the State level. Congress is the most powerful political party in India. Joining Congress will bring National level remunerations. Funding would be great with ease. Also, he has some bad experience with TDP, as his brother Pawan Kalyan was allegedly kidnapped by TDP MLA Paritala Ravi. He was always sympathetic with the Congress.
Chiranjeevi promised something, and now he is showing something different. His merger will not benefit any of his fan, as much as it helps Chiranjeevi himself. He is supposed to become a national leader for Congress affairs, and is being promised a Central ministry berth after next year’s Rajya Sabha Elections. He has given the much-needed support to AP Congress, which was on verge of a collapse because of resignations by some rebel Congress MLA’s for joining YSR-Congress.
Thirdly, It is very sad to know, that such a merger is legal and the order is passed. It is like duping the voters. Any one can start a party, get some seats, mergers into a bigger party which offers a better future for the party leaders only, even though the voter is against the bigger or stronger party.
Such a rule will jeopardize the Democratic structure of India. Previously whenever someone in a party was dissatisfied with the functioning of the party, he would quit the party, and fight the re-elections from another side. Now, anybody can loot the voter, by switching sides whenever necessary. This kind of option, will bring lots of opportunities for such opportunistic politicians who want to sell themselves when needed.
We hope, such rule is cancelled ASAP, and no more parties merge with strong or parties-in-power, and betray innocent voters and supporters.
